As software and hardware evolve over time, research data may become lost or unreadable within a matter of years. 4TU.ResearchData helps to maintain your digital files and ensures that they remain findable, accessible and (re-)usable over time - including for your future self!
In 2016, the ‘FAIR Guiding Principles for scientific data management and stewardship’ were published in Scientific Data. The authors intended to provide guidelines to improve the Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse (FAIR) of digital assets.
Researchers at other research institutions can deposit up to 10 GB of research data from ongoing or completed research free of charge. For larger data collections, please contact the research data management service desk of your home institution.
We recommend data to be "open” whenever possible*. However, you can also embargo the data (delay access for a specified time) or restrict who gets access to data. For more details, please see the Access Conditions tab on this webpage. *Data should be restricted if they are of sensitive nature (e.g. still contain personal information because the data could not be fully anonymised). For guidance, consult the GDPR policy and guidelines of your home institute on how to handle sensitive and personal data.
The original file is always stored in 4TU.ResearchData's storage. There are backups of all data in 3 locations. The storage works with version control. If a file is corrupted for some reason in our storage, the corrupted version is stored as a new version. All visitors can see the md5 check when they view a file from a dataset.
Our backups are stored in 2 different datacenters of TU Delft as well as one of Leiden University. It is not possible to delete files from the systems. The storage works with version control. When a file is corrupted/changed for some reason you get a new version of it and the original file will also be stored.
Linking your 4TU.ResearchData and GitHub account(s) allows you to make public the code associated with a research output, and make clear which version of the code you used. For detailed instructions on how to connect your GitHub and 4TU.ResearchData accounts, please see the following guide.

When a user uploads data in old(er) formats, Figshare checks the md5. First the file is in temporary storage on Figshare. After the check is okay it goes to our storage where the md5 is also checked.
