Supplementary benchmark data and experimental setup for "Experimental Studies of Regenerative Wind Farms Featuring Enhanced Vertical Energy Entrainment"

This repository contains plotting scripts, representative processed data sets, post-processing scripts, an example set of raw data, CAD models, and experimental footage related to the study titled "Experimental Studies of Regenerative Wind Farms Featuring Enhanced Vertical Energy Entrainment".

This dataset includes:


  • MATLAB scripts used to generate the figures in the associated publication.
  • Data sets used for plotting.
  • An example raw data set to demonstrate the post-processing workflow.

  • Time-lapse footage of the experiments.

Specific descriptions for data post processing


The repository contains MATLAB scripts covering the full pipeline from raw data to publication-ready figures. The post-processing examples demonstrate the workflow from CSV files (exported from DaVis 10) to processed data used in the manuscript.


Directory Structure Overview:


  • "postProcessingScripts": Contain all MATLAB scripts for post processing. Begin with this directory and review the code to determine the data needed. Ensure all directories are placed under a single master directory to maintain correct relative paths.
  • "rawDataUW_05": Contains raw CSV files exported from DaVis for case UW-05.
  • "interporlatedData_UW_05": Contains data projected onto a global grid for UW-05, using the raw data.
  • "stitchedData": Includes stitched flow field data for regenerative wind farms:

Time-averaged velocity components (U, V, W)

Time-averaged streamwise vorticity (omega_x)

Turbulent kinetic energy (Reynolds stresses: Re_xx, Re_yy, Re_zz)

Global grids and stitching weights

  • "LES_DataFromPreviousWork": Contains LES data used to cross-validate experimental results.


Post-Processing Workflow Example (for case UW-05):


  • Run "./postProcessingScripts/interporlatingToGlobalGrid/createGrid_1019.m" to create the global grid.
  • Run "./postProcessingScripts/interporlatingToGlobalGrid/loadingAndInteporlateData_UW_05_1019.m" to project the raw CSV data onto the grid.
  • Run "./postProcessingScripts/stitching_UW_05/stitchingVolumes_U_UW_05_ALL_2024_1108.m" to stitch multiple volumes of streamwise velocity data into a complete dataset for plotting. (Note that for case UW-05, there are three additional volumes that cover a wider domain at the first traverse position. Those three volumes are not measured in all the other cases.)

Directory "plotting" stores the plotting code used in this work. The name of the subdirectories and scrips should be self-explainable. The software used is MATLAB_R2022a.

The directory "footage" contains time-lapse videos of the experiments:

Specific descriptions for videos of captured particle tracks


The directory "particleTracksExamples" contains the videos of the captured particle trajectories. The case for demonstration is case UW-05, and the region focused is around -1.5 < y/D < 1.5 and 1.5 < x/D < 5.0. Both back view and side view are provided.
