Dataset

Introduction

This dataset contains the results and inputs files collected as part of the Chapter 4 in the doctoral thesis of Mr. Konstantinos Zoumpourlos, Dipl.-Ing in Delft University of Technology, 2022-2026.

The present dataset is made public to act both as supplementary data for the publications of K. Zoumpourlos and to offer other researchers the ability to use this data in their own work.

This data is part of the MENENS project (Methanol als Energiestap Naar Emissieloze Nederlandse Scheepvaart).

The project is funded by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO: Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland) under the grant number MOB21012.

Purpose of the dataset

The purpose of these simulations is to recreate the multi-hole automotive-style Spray M1 experiment by the Engine Combustion Network (ECN). The simulated condition is linked to direct injection of methanol using high injection pressure in the context of premixed internal combustion engines. The CFD framework was calibrated to achieve validation using the state-of-the-art spray models and by leveraging the methanol-dedicated ECN Spray M1 experimental dataset.

Description of the dataset

Input files for the calibrated RANS and LES CFD models for ECN Spray M1 conducted in CONVERGE-CFD 3.1.

Additionally, mean-value 0D and 3D spatial data are included for the simulation cases, as well as the experimental ECN results.

This data corresponds to the Projected Liquid Volume (PLV) maps of the 3D spatial Liquid Volume Fraction (LVF). The data are stored in .mat Matlab tables and .csv excel files ("ECN_post_processing" directory).

Inside each directory, the input files (.dat and .in files), 0D results (text format .out files) and 3D results (text format .h5 files for the RANS model only) are denoted by their respective directory names.

Finally, a matlab script named "Results-Plot.m" is included in the RANS_calibrated-model directory, which recreates the figures for the liquid penetration, liquid boundary, and 2D XY-plane LVF map. To run the script, the "ECN_post_processing" directory (containing the CFD results) and the "ECN_SprayM1_experimental-dataset" are needed for the successful execution.

The experimental results are provided open-access by the ECN organization and more information can be found in the respective website (link: https://ecn.sandia.gov/).

Dependencies

To open the simulation input files CONVERGE 3.1 is needed.

However, for the inspection of the modelling constants, initial & boundary conditions, it is possible to use a text editor to read the inputs.

To run the Matlab result plotting script, the plotci.m function is required for the illustration of the confidence intervals in the liquid penetration plots.

The 0D simulation results can be opened using Excel, Matlab, or other table reading software.

Lastly, the 3D output files can be accessed using any CFD post-processing software such as Paraview, Tecplot, etc.
