Dataset
This study investigated people’s impressions of others when they are uncertain that they will be accepted by them. We used the uncertainty intensification effect in four studies to test whether uncertainty enhances the impressions of others who exhibit a 50% probability of accepting the person in nonromantic interpersonal relationships. Using data collected in online surveys and psychology laboratory, we found that participants optimistically perceived the 50% acceptance probability, and that uncertainty enhances the impression of a target who has a 50% acceptance probability. In addition, we found that participants’ impressions of the targets improved with the increasing importance of an event and decreasing threat to the self.
The data in this folder are saved as .sav which could be opened by SPSS. All four studies used the paradigm of situational imagination, and variable names and numerical meanings were noted in the data file.
