Dataset

This dataset contains two- and three-dimensional image data acquired from optical microscopy and X-ray computed tomography (CT) of four continuous carbon-fibre-reinforced thermoplastic polymer tape specimens, all prepared from the same starting tape. The tape imaged is a commercial-grade Toray Cetex 1225, manufactured by Toray Advanced Composites.

Each specimen was polished along a transversal cross-section and imaged with a Keyence VK-X1000 confocal scanning microscope. Complementary X-ray CT scans were performed on a Zeiss Xradia 520 Versa at three voxel sizes (0.8 µm, 2.0 µm, and 3.5 µm). For all CT scans, the field of view was adjusted to include the polished top side of the specimens, while the axis of rotation remained fixed, enabling registration of the scans across voxel sizes. These datasets provide multi-scale imaging data of CFRP tape microstructure suitable for further image processing and analysis. Registered regions of interest between sub-volumes were extracted, segmented to identify fibre and pore/air space, and processed via Structure Tensor Analysis to obtain local directionality information.
