This dataset includes the results from a study in which a total of 553 participants were recruited. Out of these, 115 participants were excluded for not answering two screening questions seriously. After data collection and organization, 438 valid questionnaires were obtained, resulting in an effective rate of 79.2%. Among the valid responses, 183 participants (41.8%) identified as sexual minorities, and 255 participants (58.2%) identified as sexual majorities.

The study employed an online survey method to collect data, using a standardized questionnaire designed to measure core belief disruption, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), posttraumatic growth (PTG), and posttraumatic depreciation (PTD). The questionnaire also included items on helpful self-disclosure (HSD) and unhelpful self-disclosure (UHSD).

Data collection was conducted using the Wenjuanxing platform, and responses were anonymized to ensure participant confidentiality. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS and Mplus, including path analysis and multi-group analysis to explore the mediating roles of HSD and UHSD.

This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committees of the authors’ affiliated institutions, with the Institutional Review Board number CCNU-IRB-202306004a, confirming adherence to legal and ethical standards. Participants provided informed consent before participation, and data handling complied with relevant data protection regulations.

This dataset comprises the responses of all participants to all questionnaire items, allowing for thorough analysis and potential replication of the study.
