*** General Introduction ***
This dataset contains data collected during the STRAINS experiment off the Dutch coast
in September 2014. The dataset corresponds to the data used in the article "The
influence of tide and wind on the propagation of fronts in a shallow river plume",
published in Journal of Geophysical Research Oceans. Therefore, this dataset is mainly
focused on the frontal periods and properties.

*** Purpose of the campaign ***
The STRAINS field campaign was made to investigate the effects of stratification in
nearshore sediment transport processes and turbulence.

*** Description of the data in this dataset ***
This data set contains salinity and velocity measurements taken in 12m and 18m of
water, 10km north of the Rhine River mouth (The Netherlands). The Self-explanatory
netCDF files are provided, containing data for the Acoustic Doppler Velocimeters (ADVs),
Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) and Conductivity Depth Pressure
instruments (CTDs). In addition, a data file with the calculated frontal properties such as
intrinsic frontal speed for the 12m site has been provided as well.

The dataset consists of different data files for different periods in time. The file names
are build up as follows: instrument_SN_dd_mm_yyyy_HH_xxm_xxxsec.nc
- instrument name, e.g. ADV, CTD, ADCP with serial number if applicable
- period
- location, e.g. 12m or 18m depth
- the period over which the data has been averaged (in seconds)

The data has been quality controlled, de-spiked and time averaged over 10 minutes. The
CTD instruments have been corrected for bio-fouling.

*** Terms of use ***
The dataset has been published under the Creative Commons Attribution license. This
dataset contains just selected periods. Please contact the above mentioned contact
person for the entire time series and the raw data, which are stored at a repository
in the Netherlands and made public after completion of the entire research project.
Data Steward TU Delft CEG (datasteward-citg@tudelft.nl) might be able to help to liaise

*** Acknowledgements ***
Richard Cooke, Christopher Balfour, Margaret McKeon, Saulo Meirelles, Martijn Henriquez,
are thanked for their valuable contribution during the measurement campaign. In addition, we would like to thank Rijkswaterstaat for their help during the deployment and recovering.
The deployment of the bottom frames are funded by NERC through NOC national capability funding. The moorings were funded by
the Netherlands Technology Foundation STW program (project 12682, part of NWO) and
ERC-advanced grant 291206.
