Data of experiments in 2023, derived from root scans at 14 days and 21 days after transfer to experimental conditions using the software RhizoVision Explorer.

abbreviations used: B1 -B3 = batch 1-3 (replicates in time), Aplus = Aeroponics with extra oxygen, Amin = Aeroponics with low oxygen (this treatment did not work and was not analysed in the paper), Hplus = Hydroponic (deep water) with aeration, Hmin = Hydroponic (deep water) without aeration

stem.no.oven specifies the number of plants that were making up the fresh mass and dry mass. From every tray a few stems were harvested separately for further analysis, these are not part of the data in this file
missing root data for Ebb-flood system: plants grew in rockwool and it was not possible to extract the roots from the blocks

Aerenchyma
Data of experiment in 2023 (experiment 2 in the paper) derived from OCT scans of the roots at Delft University.
column A specifies the tray form which the root was harvested (1 plant), for treatments please refer to te file "treatments and trays LG 2023.csv"
Day means days that the plant grew in the respective treatment when it was harvested (also plant age from germination)
Aeren.A-F: length of individual Aerenchyma in the image (unit: mm) - no data = no Aerenchyma seen, all samples mentioned were imaged and examined
Aeren.total:sum of individual Aerenchyma lengths in that root
