This repository contains all data and code underlying the doctoral dissertation titled "Wired for change. Handling intermittency in a renewable energy-driven chemical industry" by Svenja Estela Bielefeld, written at Delft University of Technology under the supervision of Dr. Milos Cvetkovic and Prof. Andrea Ramirez Ramirez.
The objective of the thesis was to explore the conditions for mitigating the impact of an intermittent power supply on the chemical industry, specifically via the electrification of utility systems. A literature review and stakeholder interviews were used to generate insights about potential benefits, limitations, and requirements of flexibility in the chemical industry. Modelling, mathematical optimisation, case studies and scenario analysis were used to generate data on the electrification of existing utility systems. The repository includes the interview questions and notes related to Chapter 2 of the thesis, as well as all data and code used to generate the results presented in Chapters 3 to 5.
