We investigated the influence of soil moisture on
root growth. To this end, we installed subsurface drip lines and small soil moisture sensors (0.2 L measurement volume) inside rhizoboxes (length x width x height of 45x7.5x45 cm). The development of the vertical soil moisture and root growth profiles is tracked in space and time. This Dataset includes timeseries of soil moisture at four different depth levels inside the rhizobox , root growth rates within intervals of five days, irrigation volumes and depths and timeseries of the Rhizobox mass (most data in both matlab and excel files). The set also contains different versions of the parsimonious one-dimensional Matlab model for simulating the evolution of root growth and soil moisture inside the rhizobox .
