Data collection: This data was collected at Wetsus ( European centre of excellence for sustainable water technology), Leeuwarden (NL), and the Department of Membrane Science and Technology, University of Twente, Enschede (NL).
Funding: This work is part of the project EMPOWER, which has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research & Innovation funding programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action COFUND, grant agreement No 101034321.
The data includes the following datasets:
Ellipsometry: For the determination of dry and wet thicknesses of 4.5 bilayers of PDADMAC/PSS multilayer on a silicon wafer.
Filtration: Includes experimental results of pure water permeability and BSA (bovine serum albumin) retention of fabricated support membranes. BSA retention was determined based on a calibration curve using BSA concentrations from 1 to 200 ug/mL. Results also include experimental data of permeability (pure water, salt solution) and salt retentions of PDADMAC/PSS coated (non-crosslinked & crosslinked) nanofiltration membranes. Osmotic pressure correction was performed for the permeability during filtration with NaCl solutions with different concentrations.
GPC: Includes raw data of PEG concentrations in the feed and permeate samples obtained by GPC (gel permeation chromatography ). Filtration experiments were performed using a feed solution containing PEGs of different molecular weights (MW), feed and permeate samples were then collected and analyzed by GPC. Sieving curves can be obtained by calculating the ratio of permeate concentration/feed concentration of each experiment. Molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) is defined as 10 % sieving (90 % retention) of the PEG with a certain MW.
Reflectometry: Includes the absorption of PDADMAC and PSS in 500 mM NaCl onto a silicon wafer as a function of the number of layers (growth curve). And includes the desorption of the coated multilayer (non-crosslinked and crosslinked under different conditions) after flushing with the anionic surfactant SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate).
SEM: Includes the SEM (scanning electron microscope) image of the cross-sections of fabricated support membranes with different polymer concentrations. Membranes were cut in liquid nitrogen to obtain a sharp cross-section for the imaging.
